USDPHP: Is the PH Currency the Worst Performer This Year?

The USDPHP exchange rate hit its highest level ever and is STILL continuing to climb. Last September 27, the rate reached as high as PHP59 per 1 USD. Year to date, the Philippine Peso has devaluated by roughly 14%. However, the case here is not due to domestic issues but mostly cause of the green back’s strength. The U.S. dollar has been very strong across all currency pairs. The Dollar Currency Index has rallied by more than 19% throughout the year. We’ve seen some unusual things happen due to this. The Euro and Dollar reached parity (1:1) for the first time in two decades. Although technically not allowed, the Bank of Japan conducted a currency intervention to support the yen.

Since the majority of currencies around the world have been weak against the USD this year, this begs the question: how does the Philippine Peso rank against the other major currencies? To gain insights, we ranked some of the popular currencies.

Understanding how currency values are tracked

Before looking at performance comparisons, let’s first understand how currency values are tracked. In the foreign exchange market, tickers consist of the two currencies’ abbreviations. It can be read as how much the first currency would cost in the second currency. For example, the USDPHP hitting 59 would mean it would take 59 PHP to buy 1 USD.

To arrive at a better gauge of how different currencies have performed versus the dollar, we used the rates for how much of a certain currency is needed to buy 1 USD. This is for the purpose of the performance having a uniform method while also highlighting more of the different currencies’ performance rather than the dollar’s.

How does the USDPHP stack up against other currencies?

Despite USDPHP reaching all-time highs, the Peso isn’t the weakest currency in the market right now. The Japanese Yen has devalued the most by a large margin, going down by -28.66% versus the Dollar. The British Pound and New Zealand Dollar followed suit, with YTDs of -20.64% and -17.81% respectively. While a majority have devalued against the dollar by double digits, some have been relatively resilient. The Hong Kong Dollar rarely sees any volatility so its no surprise that it has been relatively stronger. The Singaporean Dollar and others however have fared well against the U.S. Dollar. Overall, the Philippine Peso is only in around the middle of the pack in terms of performance. However, when comparing only South East Asian countries, the PHP has lost value the most amongst its peers.

What has been the main mover of the USDPHP?

There are many factors that can affect the valuation of a currency. However, the main catalyst in FX market lately has been interest rates. The Philippines has been raising rates, but not as aggressively the United States. Whenever a country raises interest rates, its bonds become more attractive to investors. As foreign funds buy those bonds, they need to first buy the country’s currency. In effect, this raises demand for the currency causing its value to rise. Since inflation went out of control months ago, the Fed (U.S. central bank) had to raise interest rates at a fast rate. As rates keep on increasing, people have flocked to U.S. treasuries – pulling up the value of the dollar.

With interest rates at a disparity, the dollar gained strength causing it to rally – and the Philippine Peso to fall.

What are the implications of the USDPHP’s rise on the economy?

Many of our OFWs will benefit from the higher exchange rate. However, since most global trade is denominated in USD, importation costs are expected to rise. With the Philippines being a net importer, businesses and households shoulder the burden of increased prices domestically. This would often cause inflation to rise faster than usual.

The country’s debt is also affected given that debt is often denominated in dollar. With the dollar aggressively rising, a lot of countries have been put at risk of a default. Although the Philippines isn’t likely to experience a default, the increased cost is still a burden.

What we should expect moving forward

Jerome Powell, the U.S. Fed’s chairman, made it known that they will continue to be hawkish. Meaning, everyone should expect interest rates in the U.S. to stay at elevated levels. Further rate increases are also possible given that they have fully committed to bringing inflation down. Until we get confirmation that inflation has already been beaten, the U.S. dollar might continue to stay at a high valuation.

OFFICIAL: Investa partners with ATRAM Alpha Opportunity Fund, Inc.

IT’S OFFICIAL: Investa partners with one of the Top-Performing fund management companies in the Philippines — ATRAM Alpha Opportunity Fund, Inc.

Last September 23, Investa held a live event in partnership with ATRAM as they discussed what lies ahead in the market and the importance of investment opportunities in Mutual Funds investing.

Officially Starting Off the ATRAM x Investa Partnership

Kahane Pe, a business development associate of Investa, started off the event celebrating a major milestone for Investa. A partnership has been officially created with ATRAM, with the goal of helping more Filipinos become investors through mutual funds. He then further discussed the importance of mutual funds and why it is important for investors: the answer being simplicity. As not everyone has the time to keep tabs on the markets, mutual funds were mentioned to be the solution. Rather than having to craft your own strategies and research, allowing professional mutual fund managers to handle your money makes investing a simpler task to accomplish.

ATRAM’S LOCAL MARKET OUTLOOK

ATRAM’s Portfolio Manager Equities, Carlos Navarro, followed the event sharing his thoughts on the local market outlook in which he expects continued volatility as the PHP depreciates. However, he expressed that we are not lacking opportunities as these are the types of market corrections that traders should take advantage of.

Carlos believes that peeking inflation will allow the spread of the equity market over the past 10 years to get back to normal levels. He stated that if inflation peaks, interest rates will go down which will improve the spread of the equity market over the 10 year government bond. The result of this will then make the equity market more attractive to investors compared to the fixed income market.

Carlos then continues his talk showing to us ATRAM’s earnings tally in which stocks have achieved expected corporate results. As shown, the earnings for the first half of 2022 have beat their expectations of 20.5%. Do take note that they have excluded outliers such as SMC, LPG and JFC as it would exponentially increase their earnings growth figure.

One of the favorable sectors that ATRAM would like investors to take a look into is banking. Carlos stated that reasons such as loan growth, expanding net interest margins, and improving asset quality are why investors should look into this sector.

GET TO KNOW ATRAM’S ALPHA OPPORTUNITY FUND

Dionill Jamill, a manager of ATRAM, then continues the presentation talking about ATRAM’s Alpha Opportunity Fund and how they set themselves apart from their competitors in the industry.

ATRAM’s investment philosophy was presented, which serves as the organization’s road map that helps executives and staff members understand the objectives and principles the company is constantly pursuing.

Before ending his presentation, ATRAM’s manager, Dionill Jamill, showed to us the company’s stock picks that they believe will perform well in the long run.

This allows traders to invest for as low as Php1,000 in ATRAM’s top-performing funds via the investa app!

“The partnership between ATRAM went through different people, and different channels. It took time, but it was definitely worth the wait” says Erwin Angeles of Investa.

With Investa being official partners with  ATRAM Alpha Opportunity Fund, Inc., you can now invest in their mutual funds through the Investa platform. Start investing now by visiting Investa.

“For those of you who are working in the market, I mean, I know there’s a lot of volatility right now, but like what I said, these are the times where the biggest opportunities arise during this huge correction. So just stay focused and do expect a better 2023 compared to 2022, and of course, just branch in and leave it to the professional managers, and we’ll take care of the rest”, says Carlos Navarro, Portfolio Manager of ATRAM.

To wrap up the story, we are proud to announce that we now have 4 official partners: PhilEquity, BPI, SunLife and ATRAM, to bring financial inclusion and affordable investing to millions of Filipinos!

How does the Fed work?

The U.S. Federal Reserve, more commonly called the Fed, serves as the central bank of the United States. The Fed has the authority to manage monetary policy, regulate banks, and implement currency controls through market activities. However, with great power comes great responsibility. The Fed has the capability to stimulate the U.S. economy, but it also has to balance many factors to ensure the sustainability of the economy’s growth.

Federal Reserve System was founded on December 23, 1913, when President Woodrow Wilson signed the “Federal Reserve Act” into law. According to federalreserve.org, it performs five general functions to promote the effectiveness of its operations and the U.S. Economy.

  1. Conduct the nation’s monetary policy – The Fed has to manage the country’s financial policies that unemployment rates are low in terms of data, while keeping inflation rates at modest and acceptable levels.
  2. Promote the stability of the financial system – The Fed has to make sure that systematic risks is mitigated through active monitoring of the situation in the U.S. along with any global issues that may affect the economy.
  3. Promote the safety and soundness of individual financial institutions – The Fed acts as the “lender of last resort.” It is in charge of dealing with any emergencies and also acts as the central entity that handles the loans of banks from a higher point of view.
  4. Foster payment and settlement system safety and efficiency – The Fed is also responsible for ensuring that payment systems are swift and secure from any possible flaws or breaches in security.
  5. Promote consumer protection and community development – Lastly, the Fed is also responsible for overseeing how consumer demand in the economy is moving. Since it is in charge of stimulating the economy when needed, the Fed needs to be aware of the economic developments happening in the country.

In the United States federal reserve system, the country is divided geographically into twelve districts. Each of these districts or banks are incorporated as a reserve bank. The twelve federal reserve districts operate independently but are supervised by the Federal Reserve system. The photo below shows the different districts:

(FederalReserve, Sep 2021)

The Fed is powerful enough to decide and control the distribution of money and credit. In addition, it also regulates the financial institutions and heavily influences the economy’s direction. The federal reserve enjoys a unique public/private partnership structure that functions within the government. In a way, the Federal Reserve is setup like private corporation to isolate itself from political pressures or political agendas by politicians.

Inflation

When the inflation rate is above average or is rapidly surging, the Fed will implement higher interest rates in order to combat inflation. Inflation is a burden to everyone as it devaluates the money someone has. For example, if 3 packs of gummy bears were worth $10 in the year 2000, 1 pack of gummy bears would already sum up to $10 today. The Fed solves the issue of prices rising too fast by raising interest rates in order to cut down demand and slow down the rise of prices

Effects of the Fed on the Economy

The Fed’s control on the monetary policy of the U.S. also affects the availability of money. If the Fed sets low interest rates, it would cause money to flow into the economy, favoring the public and promoting economic growth. A low interest rate environment lets companies borrow money for a cheaper rate. As credit becomes more available, small and large companies alike are able to embark on more ambitious projects that help stur the economy and promote employment.

However, we have to keep in mind that interest rates need to be set at the right level, where economic growth and inflation are balanced. Having interest rates that are too high for long would most likely cause economic recessions. On the other hand, interest rates that are too low for a long time would also cause the economy to overheat and inflation to rise aggressively. Borrowing from Ray Dalio’s analogy, central banks (therefore the Fed) act like the drivers of the economy. They have to press the gas just at the right level, where the economic vehicle is neither over speeding nor going too slow.

Effects of the Fed on the Stock Market

Since the Fed has a lot of power over the direction of the economy, it would make sense that it would also have an impact on the stock market. It is worth pointing out that turning points of the stock market are often affected by decisions of the Fed. The great Stanley Druckenmiller went as far as to say that the main thing investors and trader should look at when trading stocks is how central banks move. Liquidity remains as the number one factor that moves asset prices. As the Fed holds power over how much money circulates in the economy, they also hold the power to move the markets. Keep in mind, however, that balance still needs to be maintained. Pushing a lot of liquidity in the economy will do wonders for the stock market in the short-term, but will have severe consequences in the long run as inflation might go out of control.

Whether you’re a passive investor or a full-time trader, it will always be important to look out for how the Fed is steering the economy. Fed decisions often act as indicators for many financial institutions and hedge funds. Knowing how the economy might be affected by Fed decisions will help keep you a step ahead in predicting where the broad market will head towards.

Featured Trader of the Week: @CharlesRN

Congratulations to @CharlesRN for being the featured trader of the week!

Sami Abusad once stated “Are you willing to lose money on a trade? If not, then don’t take it. You can only win if you’re not afraid to lose. And you can only do that if you truly accept the risks in front of you.” In the case of @CharlesRN, he believes that in the long-term value of his picks, and patience played a vital role for his trades.

@CharlesRN has been sharing his thoughts consistently in the Investa community. @CharlesRN has been a member of the Investagrams community since Sep 2017 and has been very active recently.

A couple of weeks ago, our featured trader posted his technical analysis on $RRHI, a hot stock in the local market. $RRHI recently broke its resistance at the 50-51 area.

As the stock recently reached a 52-wk low last June 24. @CharlesRN charted its support, volume,  resistance,  MA, and RSI on the chart, bound for a breakout in its trendline as he believes in its technical analysis. @CharlesRN felt an opportunity to have a good entry near the support and HOLD for a while.

TECHNICALS OF THE TRADE

Technically, the $RRHI broke its trendline at 50-51 area. Thus, the stock recently reached 57ish area and retesting at support in 53ish area. After breaking out at the 50-51 level, RRHI’s volume surges along with its RSI. On the other hand, others are falling and consolidating. RRHI is showing strength in terms of volume as it continues to retest after breaking out the trendline area. It came from a 52-wk low of 45.95ish before surging and breaking the 50-51 trendline area and resistance. There could be a retest in the next few weeks in RRHI for this stock to retest its resistance and support. Technically speaking next resistance of RRHI  is the 58 levels onwards. Furthermore, RRHI will retest whether it will surge more or be back at the bearish side.

@CharlesRN was confident that this stock would retest its support and resistance. He also charted that RRHI will go up as he indicated in his TA the supports, resistances, MA, Volume, and the RSI. He charted a good entry near the support and possible resistance. He is also observing the movement of RRHI. Further to that, he is planning his trades carefully.

FUNDAMENTAL CATALYST

RRHI takes the spotlight in the local stock market, and recently broke its downtrend line at 50-51 area. Robinsons Retail Holdings Incorporated is a retailing company engaged in supermarkets, department stores, convenience stores, drug stores, appliances and electronics, beauty, mass merchandise, and e-commerce. RRHI are founded and led by the Gokongwei Group. A prominent family and billionaires engaged in almost all of the industries in the Philippines and Internationally. Furthermore, $RRHI has been a trend recently, and the volume from the locals and foreigners is increasing. In addition, $RRHI recently has a buy-back program. It is still unknown whether $RRHI will rise further or fall back down. Thus, it is best to observe $RRHI and plan a good entry. In addition, the Philippine Economy is expected to keep on growing moving forward as the Philippine Government has announced there will be no more lockdowns.

WHAT SHOULD BE MY NEXT MOVE

As the stock recently breakout from the 50-51ish area, it would be wiser to observe and wait for what $RRHI might do next before jumping in. This stock is wise for long-term holding since the services industry could be a top industry pick. The demand from consumers is continually growing. However, it’s best to wait for a consolidation, pullback, or a good entry near its support for a better risk-to-reward ratio. It would also be advisable to trade lightly and in tranches given that we’re not yet out of the woods.

Once again, KUDOS to @CharlesRN for being this week’s featured trader!

To show our appreciation, you will be given a 14-day InvestaPrime Access which will be granted to you by the end of the month and you will be advised by our Customer Service Team once it’s ready in your account. We hope this inspires you to continue to be an inspiration to the trading community!

Featured Trader of the Week: @gabrielo

Let’s give a round of applause to @gabrielo for being this week’s Featured Trader!

@gabrielo has been a member of the Investagrams community since October 2017 and has been very active recently. He is always sharing his thoughts and his trades.

A week ago, our featured trader posted his technical analysis on $ABA, a hot stock in the local market. $ABA recently breakout and reached 52-wk highs at 1.67 ish!

As the stock is on an uptrend, @gabrielo charted its support, resistance,  MA, and Fibonacci Retracement level, and RSI on the chart that was bound for a breakout or breakdown. @gabrielo felt that this was an opportunity to have a good entry near the support and sell around the resistance.

TECHNICALS OF THE TRADE

Technically speaking, $ABA recently reached a 52-wk high and is bound for a much higher price or plunge of the stock price. After breakout at the 1.56 ish, ABA’s volume surges along with its RSI. While others are falling, $ABA is showing strength as it continues to move upwards strongly. It came from a breakout at the 1.56 area before surging to 1.60+ area onwards. There could be a retest in the next few weeks as ABA recently reached a 52-wk high. Technically speaking, the next resistance that ABA could face is the 1.8 level. Furthermore, ABA will retest whether it will surge more or a reversal after reaching the 52-wk high.

@gabrielo was confident that prices will further go up as he indicated in his chart the supports, resistances, and the trendline. He charted a good entry near the support and possible resistance to break.

FUNDAMENTAL CATALYST

AbaCore Capital Holdings, Inc. has interests in the leasing of gaming equipment, gold and coal mining, real estate, and financial services. Furthermore, $ABA has been on an uptrend and the volume from the locals and foreigners is surging as well. It is still unknown whether $ABA will push further or reverse. In addition, ABA’s book value as of 1Q 2022 is 3.5 per share. Thus, it is best to observe $ABA before entering since it recently reached a 52-wk high. Further to that, it is best to consider the sentiment of the market, as well as the technical indicators and the financial statement before engaging in.

WHAT SHOULD BE MY NEXT MOVE

As the stock recently reached a 52-wk high, it would be wiser to observe and wait for what $ABA might do next before riding in. It is still unsure whether $ICT will continue to surge, so it’s best to wait for a consolidation, pullback or a good entry near its support for a better risk-to-reward trade. In addition, it is best to have alternative stock picks that are more profitable and good trade such as bottom picking stocks or stocks that could surge to due global demand.  Furthermore, it would be advisable to trade lightly and in tranches.

Once again, KUDOS to @gabrielo for being this week’s featured trader! Enjoy your 14-day InvestaPrime Access and continue to be an inspiration to the trading community.

Real Estate Investment Trust: A good source of Income?

Manila, Philippines – Ayala established the first Real Estate Investment Trust in the Philippines on August 13, 2020, which is known up to today as AREIT. For that year, REITs during that time were speculative, with different opinions both positive and negative feedback from investors, entities, traders, and the public. Some opinions from the public said that it is a suitable alternative to savings accounts as REITs produce quarterly dividends which are way higher compared to savings accounts in banks. However, during the listing date, AREIT faced a whopping decline of 7.78% which made the entity doubted and feared, and gaining bad market sentiment.

Up to this date, a lot of REITS have been listed on the Philippine Stock Exchange and these include FILREIT, DDMPREIT, RCR, MREIT, CREIT, and the upcoming REIT from the Villar Clan, VREIT. A lot of prominent clans and powerful families are establishing REITs to diversify their portfolio and at the same time, to engage in these businesses. Further to that, real estate investment involve the properties they are managing. Some are in the growth stage, some are established already. These things will depend on the management of each REIT. But the real essence of it is what? Is it the dividends? The price appreciation? This will depend on the perspective of the entity.

According to BusinessWorld, there is outstanding market interest in REITs seen to continue in 2022 and throughout the years. Since the economy is recovering and bouncing back from the pandemic, some investors are encouraged to invest in REIT as they beats inflation in the country and at the same time, is a source of cash flow. REIT companies are aggressive in terms of capital infusion, expansion, renewal of contracts to their clients, and growth. Furthermore, if REITs aggressively get the market spotlight, this will have a domino effect on the real estate industry as it will bounce back, and the growth remains. In addition to that, the dividend yield rate of the industry is growing yearly based on AREIT’s forecast and other REITs.

In terms of renewable energy REITs, CREIT  known as Citicore REIT is one of the top picks of local and foreign investors as CREIT is known for its focus on leasing land to its affiliated companies that are engaged in renewable energy businesses. With its tagline “Community-focused renewable energy and water solutions company that responsibly harnesses nature’s resources to fuel long-term value and empower Filipino communities,” Furthermore, Citicore REIT focuses on long-term growth, as well as maintaining sustainability throughout the years. In addition to that, CREIT is known for giving higher dividend yields compared to other REITs with a whopping 7% as forecast in the year 2022. During the 1Q of 2022, CREIT issued 0.044 PHP per share to each common shareholder with a distributable income amounted to 285.09M PHP.

Investing with these REITs is ideally for investors/entities who are engaged in CASHFLOW. According to the well-known author Mr. Robert Kiyosaki, cash flow is something that is produced by an ASSET that produces money or income-generating. An asset that produces cash to an entity without its presence of it. Therefore, these include Real Estate Properties, Stocks, Bonds, REITs, and so on. Furthermore, REIT is a suitable alternative for your savings as it beats inflation. Year by year, basic commodities are increasing, utility bills, gas, food, medicine, and so on due to inflation. With that, if you have excess money in your bank account that produces 0.25 – 1%, is it worth it? These things will depend on the perspective of the owner of the money. Is real estate investment a suitable alternative and a source of funds with a rate of 4% – 7%, and with the upcoming VREIT which is forecasted to produce 8.24% of dividend yield? Of course, these things will depend on YOU!

There are various ways to invest in these real estate investments. Some platforms and banks are offering these products to their customers. To begin with, there are various online platforms such as COL Financial, Abacus Securities, ChinaBank Securities, First Metro Securities, and so on. In addition, some banks are offering IPO before the listing date and these banks include BDO, China Bank, BPI, PNB, and so on. Thus, there are a lot of opportunities in the market, and if you’re into DIVIDENDS, REITs are good alternatives. With its high yield of dividends, it is very attractive to investors and entities who are into CASHFLOWS.

Why REITs? It’s not mainly about dividends, but price appreciation as well. For example, AREIT, during the listing date of AREIT, it is publicly listed at 27 PHP per share and last January 2022 it  broke the resistance level of 50 and maintained its level to 50-52 per share. Let me ask you? Is it a good investment? Of course, price appreciation and dividends. Furthermore, when it comes to AYALA management, some say that we’re in good hands since AYALA is a well-known and prominent family that controls different entities locally and internationally. These things will differ from the perspective of different investors, like with AREIT, a more growth company. And if you’re into much higher yield, try to consider CREIT, DDMPR, and the upcoming VREIT.

REITs are more becoming popular these days due to the interest of the market, both local and foreign. In addition, the rise of REITs gave more chances for Filipinos to learn about investing in general. This opens up a chance for Filipinos to become more financially literate and be part of the growth of these well-known companies. For different entities and institutions, this is a chance to be part of it, it beats the inflation, and the stock price of each real estate investment appreciates or depreciates but as long as it produces good cash inflow, is it good or bad? This will depend on YOU!

Featured Trader of the Week: HULYO

Let’s give a round of applause to HULYO for being this week’s Featured Trader!

HULYO has been a member of the Investagrams community since 2020 and has been an active member of our community. Along with being an IT automation engineer, HULYO also actively trades and is very interactive with other traders.

A few days ago, our featured trader posted his thoughts for PSE:SCC. One of the stronger stocks in the local markets recently, SCC mainly operates through the production and sale of coal.

Amidst the poor market conditions, HULYO still looks for opportunities, and one of the opportunities spotted was PSE:SCC. As PSE:SCC rose from its bottom, it wasn’t safe from market drawdowns as shareholders experienced sell-offs. However, it is still noticeable that the uptrend is still intact, and the stock appears to have formed a continuation pattern.

TECHNICAL STANDPOINT

In terms of price action, PSE:SCC is in a clear uptrend despite the rough market conditions. Without making anything too complex, higher highs and higher lows are continually being established. It isn’t in the strongest of uptrends as drawdowns from the tops are wide, but the fact that it still is in an upward general direction while others are falling isn’t something to take lightly. As with what HULYO mentions in his post, the recent breakout could signal that it is receiving enough demand to boost it towards higher targets. One of the biggest supply areas that it needs to take out would be around the 40 area, with the next one being its ATH level of 50.

FUNDAMENTAL STANDPOINT

PSE:SCC focuses mainly on coal production. With coal prices rising rapidly in the commodities market due to supply disruptions, PSE:SCC stands to benefit from increased margins as they will be able to sell their inventories at higher prices. Although the shift toward renewable energy has started, coal is expected to remain one of the sources of energy production for the next few years. It is forecasted that coal prices will stay elevated for a foreseeable future.

What should be my next step?

As we have constantly been mentioning, the current market environment is not suitable for newbie traders. Even though PSE:SCC has been strong thus far, shareholders will still most likely experience a lot of volatility. There will be a lot more opportunities later on not just in this stock, but in others as well. However, should you want to trade PSE:SCC it would be more advisable to wait for retracements and to keep your positions light. Risk management becomes even more essential during bad market conditions like the one we are experiencing now.

Once again, KUDOS to HULYO for being this week’s Featured Trader! Enjoy your 14-day InvestaPrime Access and continue to be an inspiration to the trading community.
